new song demo: U.S. Grant

Here's one I've been working on the past few months.

U.S. Grant

heaven and hell / are both a stone's throw away
you get your orders stamped / and you set off on your way

you can't stay in the station / it's not a permanent home
and you can't save anyone / if you die alone

so travel light, and fast / keep moving, night and day

cordwood like bodies / and bodies crouched below
our sword is hunger / and our shield is snow

a man won't last forever / once the hard tack has run out
and all he can consume / are his fears and his doubts
they will rot him through / like the devil in the ground

he may try to escape / but he may as soon lie down

i have seen my enemy / by the thousands killed
and at my hand / that destruction willed

tonight i share a roof / with men maimed by my hand
and i would not withhold from them / my very last dram
but eventually i must / ignore their cries

as i plan the increase / of the wounded and the dead.

wilco loves you baby (5th time's the charm)

So after our last 2 Wilco gigs being kinda weird (saw them open for Neil Young in Philly, and then saw them at the really weird venue in Niagara), tonight's An Evening With Wilco at the Carnegie Music Hall was pure bliss. While I like every album, and everything they play, it was a blast to finally get to hear/see them play some songs from A.M., including Box Full of Letters and Passenger Side, two favorites.

overheard from Kyrgyzstan

The people who did this are scum. They should be hung in the street. Let me hang them. I am a doctor, but I will gladly renounce my profession to hang them.
- from an NPR story on Wednesday's uprising in Kyrgyzstan.

The audio will be available at noon today, so I'll be able to see how closely I remembered this quote from the doctor that was interviewed.
