Midlake -- The Trials of Van Occupanther

Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther

So, of the four albums recently received, the jury is definitely still out. First impressions:

  • Homerun: Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther. Definitely outta the park.
  • Triple: Cold War Kids - Robbers & Cowards. I'm not completely sold on the re-recorded versions of some of my favorites; while the sound quality is much better, a couple of the new versions lack the edge of the originals from the EPs.
  • ?: Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - The Letting Go. It almost always takes me a while to warm up to a new Bonnie Billy album.
  • ?: Band of Horses - Everything all the Time. Funeral- one of my favorite songs of the year. Ben Bridwell's voice for an entire album- something I'm still warming up to.

No great surprises so far, but The Trials of Van Occupanther reallt lives up to my expectations. Here's the song of the year, Roscoe, and the album's second track, Bandits. Bandits is a great song that would feel at home on Phil Keaggy's second album.
